parked in the limited spaces. “Customers have to drive around the block to get into the parks out the front of the shop and we are getting a lot of complaints.� The 30min parking spaces were removed from the road to extend the left turn bay onto Main North Rd to help ease congestion and make it safer

for cyclists. Resident Gary Watts, who presented both petitions, said it was “poor decision-making� by the city council and community board. But Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said issues over the removal of the car parks should have been brought to it when it

was considering the proposal. He told the Nor’West News he could not comment on whether there was a chance the car parks could be reinstated until after city council staff had reported back with traffic congestion data. Mr Davidson said he had also asked council staff to check whether “proper process� was followed. “It is a bit of a shame this has happened, we will be looking into it.�

neighbourhood NEWS RISKING IT: A car runs a red light on Idris Rd at the intersection with Glandovey Rd. Red light traffic signal running has been labelled as an “epidemic” in the city after 4960 vehicles ran red lights in a single day at the city’s worst intersections. Glandovey and Idris Rds intersection is the third worst in the city with 446 red light runners. The data does not include those turning right on traffic signal. Canterbury Transport Operations Centre manager Ryan Cooney said not only was red light running “getting worse” but it was an “epidemic issue”. While drivers had a responsibility, he said traffic engineers also had to think of solutions. These could include options around addressing the way traffic signals were phased, he said. ENHANCE EDGEWARE Plans are in place to enhance the Edgeware area with some moveable planter boxes filled with small trees, bench seating and bicycle stands. The stands will include bicycle tools if cyclists need a bit of help with a repair. They will provide a handy stopping point for those heading down the new cycle route to places like Belfast. City council has said they should be installed before the end of the year. NEW MEDICAL BUILDING The new ProMed building in Sherborne St will open its extension in November housing a medical practice, a physiotherapist and a pharmacy. Work will begin after that out the back on a new parking area expected to be completed in February 2016. The businesses will operate separately.

New Carlton Mill footbridge open today Carlton Mill’s new $1 million footbridge will be opened today, after four months of work. The footbridge, connecting Little Hagley Park and Carlton Mill Rd, was badly damaged by the February 2011 earthquake. Work began on the bridge in May and was expected to take six months, but the project

has gone smoothly and will be finished ahead of schedule. City council treaty relations adviser Te Marino Lenihan will perform a karakia and blessing of the new bridge. Resident Ken McAnergney who was instrumental in gathering community feedback for the handrail design for the new bridge, will give a speech

at the opening. Mr McAnergney was one of a group of residents who wanted the original designs for the bridge changed as it did not allow users to view the river as they crossed. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board deputy chairman David Cartwright said the new design and change in process

was positive. “It’s a gold medal example of consultation at its best. We were able to work with everybody,” he said. He said the new design “ticks all the boxes” for what the community needed. The project will have its ribbon cut by Mayor Lianne Dalziel at 10am.

your local Views Do your part to discourage beggars Sergeant Brendon Strieker – Papanui police Recently the community have highlighted to police the increase in people begging and feeling intimidated by their actions. A commentary from the public around Northlands shopping centre and Bishopdale Village Mall relating to beggars include intimidation, annoying, frustrating and feeling reluctant to go into stores where they congregate. They are very well versed in their actions and story. This is their job and often what they do full time. They have a set plan and agenda and can be aggressive in their approach. They are very believable, however, the reality are that they are scamming you out of your money. Police have already identified and spoken to these individuals and actively assisted them by seeking help with other outside agencies and services. The police have also trespassed them

SOAP BOX on behalf of business owners. To be fair, of the four recently dealt with have all been reasonable and are open to letting police put them in touch with services. As a result there has been a decrease in this type of offending, however, as a preventative measure I recommend that you never hand over change or money no matter how convincing the person’s story is. When we do, we make that person’s actions acceptable and they will continue to harass and intimidate people. If you feel intimidated, at risk and believe you are the victim of a crime, phone police on 363 7400 and report the incident.

I just came back from Scarborough beach in Brisbane, and what a difference there to the shambles in Brighton, I’ve lived in Marine Parade for 43 years, so I know what I’m talking about. If we don’t have the shops or the pools, that we have been promised for the last 40 years, they might just as well shut up Brighton and put the lights out. D Columbus: Fishing off the New Brighton Pier is a right to all that fish the pier. The pier was advertised as a level two pier, one upper level and one lower level. The people of Christchurch were asked to donate money. Families and individuals would then be buying a piece of concrete, steel rail or cobblestone and then their names would be placed onto or around the pier. At the first attempt to close

the pier and ban fishing, a meeting was held at the New Brighton Working Men’s Club. I attended that meeting with many other people opposed this ban. I asked the city council spokesperson at that meeting what happened to the second lower landing that would be for fishing and where did all the donated money for this section go? We were told that the city council at that time took out that money and used it for a building in the city centre, that is why the pier is built the way it is now. Tom Higgs: Please tell me how can some community board ban fishing from somewhere they don’t own? My family owns $10,000 of the pier through our donation. If they ban fishing, we would want our money back, as it’s not being used the way we were led to believe it was going to used by

every one, not just by people walking to look. Walter Roy: I fully support the fishing ban on the pier. Karen Renouf: Please ban fishing on Brighton pier at the weekend!!!!

Merivale church rises from quake rubble An iconic Merivale church has been rebuilt. The Chinese Methodist Church in now open after the September 2010 earthquake destroyed its building on the corner of Papanui Rd and Rugby St. The church had only just taken over the building three months prior to the quake. Pastor Simon Goh said they went back to their original site, the English Methodist Church in Brake St, Upper Riccarton, while working out whether to rebuild or repair. “We had three engineers say we could repair it but it would have been very expensive,” he said. The estimated cost was $4 million to repair the Merivale landmark. It was only insured for $2.75 million. Mr Goh said they had to consider “time and money” when it came to the Merivale site. “What we have built is the best we could do with our

Business stands strong after trials Hardie & Thomson is Edgeware’s oldest business standing strong for 108 years. John Thomson has been there since 1952 and chats with reporter Andrew King about how the business has survived fires, earthquakes and working with a famous Christchurch builder Hi John tell us about Hardie & Thomson? My grandfather started it in 1908. He brought out Mr Hardie in the 1900s and built the business supplying timber and coal. They also did some building and joining. The building burnt down in 1933 on Anzac Day because the fire brigade took two hours to arrive, they were having a party. It was rebuilt and it really hasn’t looked back. Are you the oldest business in Edgeware? Yes, we have been around for 108 years now. Still going strong and really looking forward to the future. How long have you been involved? I have been with the business since 1963, 52 years. Is it a case of following in your father’s footsteps?

No. I just wanted to leave school, so I started work in the joinery side of the business. Did that interest you? No. I just wanted out of school so I would have done anything. I took the joinery side of things over when the guy running it left. We did a reasonable amount of jobs and when you put your heart and soul into something like that and it is not appreciated that’s not great. People want things cheap and don’t want to pay the price so that is a touch upsetting. Your father and grandfather must have been pretty hard working guys? They both were. My dad worked in the joining side of things when he started off, then moved into the machine side of things. My grandfather worked very hard to make the

place a success. Do you have any brothers and sisters? I have two sisters, but they don’t have anything to do with the business. One lives in the United States and the other in Christchurch. Is there a special relationship between yourself and the Edgeware area?

Well we are definitely known around the area. I am very keen on the place and that is why we will rebuild here. We won’t have our factory here but we will sell from here. We are getting away from concrete and steel and moving more into the timbers with our new showroom that will be built with the same materials that we will sell.

The business has survived so much with 107 years of history, will it still be there 100 years from now? I would say at least. We are excited about the future. We now have magnesium board for the inside of houses which is better than Gib board. It doesn’t do the same thing in an earthquake as Gib board does. You can get water on it as well and it is fine. Are people starting to look more at these materials now that the rebuild is taking off? The problem in this town is that you have a city council that sit on their hands and are not very helpful. If it is slightly different then they don’t want to know about it. We should be thinking differently. We need to be protecting our resources in this country. What have you seen in the time you have been there? When we started we had a much bigger site. Dad had five sisters and one brother so it all got carved up between them. We owned most of Edgeware, our site is much smaller now. One famous apprentice that has come through was Charles Luney, did you know him?

St Albans Cricket Club is a strong girls’ and women’s club. Last season the club won more than half of the grades from young girls to the top level. We really value and look after our females in what some would say is a male-dominated sport. Our aim is for the girls (and women) to have fun, build lasting friendships and develop cricket skills that will enable them to be successful both on and off the field. Papanui Badminton Club Runs from February to November – in the Bishopdale YMCA. We get together on a Thursday, and we play from 9-10pm, and we hire out a court. We charge everyone $20 so we generally have eight or 10 people that participate in the games. We’re a very sociable group, and we’re always looking for new badminton players. We

have a big range of people who play with us. We have a mother who takes her kids to school, and then about four of us are senior citizens. We generally go out for lunch or dinner as a group, a couple of times a year. Our group is aged from around 45-80. Canterbury Flyers Frisbee Club Ilam fields near Canterbury University We play Ultimate Frisbee a five/seven a side non contact sport. There are mixed teams and single gender teams and competitions. The club has about 350 members from social teams, work groups and individuals who play in the social league on Monday nights. A more serious group who appreciate the physicality and personal challenge in competitive games, play on Tuesday nights. We are looking for new players and teams for the social league on Monday nights, 6pm on the Ilam fields. This starts October 5 but there are opportunities to ‘have a go’ on Sundays in Hagley Park, by the netball courts, from 2pm. Rail trail challenges Selwyn House girls Selwyn House pupils have tested their endurance spending five days on the Otago Central Rail Trail. The ride is an annual event for all year 8 pupils and requires a bit of training beforehand. The trip is carefully planned to regulate the time spent cycling. Three of the four days will involve cycling, averaging 40km each day. Other activities will include walks, curling and historical tours of Naseby and St Bathans. The school encourages pupils to train for the rail trail. In previous years the school has sent out an email to all year 8 parents asking if they are taking their daughter for a ride to get a group together. Some parents have taken this opportunity to join them and do

some training together. They left on September 14 with a quick lunch stop at Lake Tekapo, then stop off at Clyde to pick up the rental bicycles and then cycled the 8km to Alexandra. On day two the girls cycled 36km from Alexandra to Lauder. The third day was a 35km ride to Wedderburn then they hopped on a bus to Naseby. Day four saw the girls wearily mount their bicycles again and cycle 43km from Wedderburn to Hyde where they will get a well-deserved rest before heading home in the morning.

Wheelie good time for Cotswold pupils Getting out in the sunshine and playing in the mud brought a smile to the face of Cotswold School pupils. The year 3 pupils brought their bicycles to school for a bike rally. With helmets fitted tight, 90 pupils took to the hills on McLeans Island. The more able-riders completed the 15km track, with some groups opting for the 10km track.

The aim of the event was to encourage the community to use the local resources and to promote healthy choices outside of school. This event was organised by sports coordinator and teacher, David Guthrie. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to show off their cycling skills – and some were even faster than the parent helpers.

Estelle Lin, 8, really enjoyed going down the hills. “You go really fast and it’s really fun even if you fall over,” she said. Brooklyn Sunnex, 7, enjoyed getting his legs really wet and muddy. Dakota Taylor also enjoyed going down the hills and said: “I liked going through the puddles because you get really dirty.”

Cobham big winner of AIMS Games Cobham Intermediate has returned from the AIMS Games with a great haul of medals. More than 8000 athletes, from 261 schools competed in 19 different sports, making it the country’s largest sports event. Cobham’s 63-strong team won seven medals placing them 12th on the medal table, out of. The school achieved the best in the South Island with next closest placed 53rd on the table. Principal Scott Thelning was

delighted with the result saying that the team’s performance was ‘awesome’. “It was great to hear that our team operated as a team and all supported each other throughout the week,” he said. “We want to thank all of the parents/caregivers who were able to attend some, or all, of the events and support the effective organisation of our team by managing, coaching and/or cheering.”

Pupils in Room 20 at Fendalton Open Air School have spent the last two terms enjoying a good book with a nice drink to accompany it. They called it ‘LiteraTEA time’ with parents coming in to help out with the activities. Room 20 teacher Marama Buck said: “This year I have been lucky enough to have a group of parents who have been keen and able to be part of our learning day. “After a term of several inclass helpers I thought I should try and make the most of it,” she said. She had read about Literature Circles and thought it would be a fun way to keep kids passionate about reading, and also to create a powerful home-school whanau relationship. Every Friday afternoon five or six mums came in to Room 20 and had a tea party with their child and others. They had hot drinks and biscuits while the mums read them a story, then they did a

follow-up activity. There were paperbag princesses (and princes), chalk drawing and a huge variety of activities every week.

After the success of LiteraTEA time, this term they started ExperimenTEA time. Dads got involved, as well as mums, bringing in resources and ingredients to do some fun and crazy science experiments from fake snot, tornado in a bottle, vinegar volcano and lava lamps. “I would never have been able to do this kind of learning with my kids on my own, from both a practical view, and financial,” Ms Buck said. “Our TEA times have been highlight of the week for all

Josh McKay was named in the New Zealand Schools rugby side after attending a training camp last weekend. He joins a long list of Christchurch BHS first-fives to excel in the no 10 jersey. Current All Blacks first-fives Dan Carter and Colin Slade are old boys of the school as are former All Blacks Aaron Mauger and Andrew Mehrtens. McKay’s Christchurch BHS coach, Rhys Archibald said he was thrilled for him. “Josh is a very hard worker and played hard all year. Before the season he was always the first one in the gym in the morning, he trains every day and knows how to go through the pain barrier,” Archibald said. Three other Christchurch players also made the schools side. Toc H athlete selected for world champs Papanui-Toc H athlete Caitlin Dore has been selected for the New Zealand team to head to the International Paralympic Committee World Championships. The former St Andrew’s College student will compete in the shot put, discuss and javelin. The teenager was born with cerebral palsy but has excelled in the athletics arena. She is the Canterbury javelin champion in her section and won silver medals in the shot put and the discuss at the Canterbury champs earlier this year. The championships take

place next month in Doha, Qatar, and she will be joined by one other Canterbury athlete at the games. Port Hills Athletic Club’s William Stedman has also been selected and will compete in the 200m, 400m and long jump. Six other athletes will join Dore and Stedman on the New Zealand team, four from Otago, one from Tasman and one who is based in Australia. The team assembles on Friday for a camp in Dunedin that will include heat simulation preparation and two competitions.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student Una Foyle has made it into the New Zealand women’s under-20s World Cup squad. The 16-year-old is one of three Christchurch girls to make the squad and is super excited to make the side. “I am really excited to be in the side,” she said. “I had to keep it quiet for a while but now everybody knows.” Una has been playing football since she was eight but it hasn’t crossed her mind yet if she wants to be a professional soccer player. “Haven’t really thought it through [being a pro footballer], but it would be cool.” She is one of the younger players but not the youngest in the squad.. We went to Thailand with New Zealand Secondary Schools Team in July,” she said.

Playcentre work completed by volunteers Hard-working volunteers have completed work on the outside area at the St Albans Playcentre. Playcentre families both past and present and the local community have raised $12,750 for the landscaping costs alone. The cumulation of hard work and dedication of the centre’s whanau, the local community, local businesses and volunteers have made the redevelop-

ment possible. The opening day event will be held on October 3 at 10.30am. A local Kaumatua will bless the land and the area will be opened by the oldest play centre child. This event will also provide the opportunity for the play centre to introduce the Mairehau community to its special early childhood service and in-

vite families with young children to join. Established in November 2005, the play centre has been on its present site on the grounds of the now disestablished Glenmoor School since February 2006. As result of the school closure, the land was gifted to play centre by the Ministry of Education and developed by the families with the help of

The high wind and storm conditions that swept through the city on Thursday last week caused quite a number of fire calls to power lines down and trees fallen. Lightning caused a fire in Bromley School. A couple of trampolines took off until tied down by pursuing firefighters. A tin shed in Woolston left its pad and threatened to fly. One of the city fire crews found themselves at a tree blocking the road in Horseshoe Lake Rd. Normally these incidents call for experts, especially when power lines are involved but in this case it was quite a simple matter of cutting the tree down to small enough pieces to be pulled to the side of the road. I think it’s a bloke thing.

But the chance to wield a good quality chainsaw in anger is something most of us really enjoy. Ten minutes later the roadway was clear and the crew off to their next task. Good work done. The occupants of a house in Aranui would have come home last Saturday to a polite note left by firefighters who had to enter their house to deal with a pot of sausages burning on the stove. It’s so easy to do, to forget you’ve got something cooking. But leaving the house like this is a recipe for it not being there when you return. Another reminder. Next week daylight savings begins. Olive Tapenade: ¾ cup pitted black Kalamata olives 1 tbsp capers, washed and drained 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil Freshly ground black pepper to taste Asparagus: 500g asparagus

To make the tapenade, place the olives, capers, garlic, olive oil and pepper into a food processor or blender and process, until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. Snap the tough ends off the asparagus and trim the stalks if necessary. Place in a small roasting

single layer. Sprinkle the tea into a wok. Place the rack about 4cm over the tea. Cover with foil. Place a lid on the wok and smoke the asparagus on low heat until it is crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Don’t over-smoke as the asparagus will become too strong. Cut into 1cm pieces. Spread the ciabatta with the garlic cannellini then top with the asparagus. Garnish.

Not all first aid certificates

are created equal While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.

T

here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term workplace can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course

is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be for training based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment. First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure

the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times.

Return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance

T

his year marks the return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance after an absence of three years, following the Christchurch earthquakes. Pre-2010, every year without fail and regardless of the theme, spectators were guaranteed the chance to get up close and personal with more than 70 special classic and vintage vehicles as they were shown off in all their waxed and buffed glory, and this year the show will be no different. Key to the event is the proximity families and individual spectators can get to some of the most unique vehicles in New Zealand, and the fact that the cars’ owners are on hand to answer questions about the pedigree, history and specification of their charges. As well as individual exhibitors, the Classic Car Show also attracts car clubs from around the South Island as a mainstay of the vintage vehicle calendar. Most of the participating clubs will be organising their displays around a given theme, with many interesting variations expected. All of them will feature their club cars as centrepieces before filling their display areas with all sorts of props and memorabilia to catch the eyes of the judges, who will be spending the weekend comparing displays. The judges themselves are made up of a mixture of club personnel and members of the public, with the winning club receiving a large trophy and other prizes for their showmanship and attention to detail. Many cars will showcase their special pedigree while others grab attention simply for their uniqueness and rarity, but each and every one of them will be a testament to the dedication and sheer passion of their owners who will have made every effort to display them in pristine condition.

The Classic Car Show organising committee say that each year, the show keeps getting better as New Zealand’s premier indoor event of this type. There are other classic car shows in New Zealand, but this is the biggest indoor show devoted entirely to classic, vintage and rare cars in the country. It really provides people with the chance to see the very best of the South Island’s classic cars in all their glory. As usual, the show will feature a great variety of classic cars from across the world, with American, European and British vehicles rubbing shoulders under one roof at Pioneer Stadium. While seeing an Aladdin’s Cave of classic cars all on display side-by-side is considered a sight to remember by all car enthusiasts, the Canterbury Intermarque Concours d’Elegance, which takes place at every Classic Car Show, is always a particular highlight. Cars of all years and makes are eligible to participate in the competition which was first organised by the MG Car Club over 30 years ago. The event rewards enthusiasts who follow a very strict criteria of detailing, cleanliness, condition and originality, with different awards up for grabs in a diverse range of categories. Of the 80 or so vehicles which attend the show every year, around 25 enter the intense competition to be judged according to their year of manufacture, originality and condition. Prizes will be awarded at 7pm on Saturday night of the show, and the public is invited to remain for the presentations. None of this would be possible without the support of sponsors, and the organisers acknowledge the support of local car restoration firm Upper Classics, who will have their own special display at the show.

The show, held indoors at Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre, Lyttelton Street, Spreydon, is open to the public on Saturday, September 26, from 9am to 7.30pm, and on Sunday, September 27, from 9am to 4pm. Admission $10 for adults and $2 for children.

Big engine power for Toyota Aurion SPECIFICATIONS

Whereas Toyota has just launched a new generation Camry, its stablemate, the bigengined Aurion, which shares much the same ideology, doesn’t take on such a dramatic change. However, it has had a facelift which will see it through to the end of Australian manufacture in 2017. And the reality is, there was little in the old Aurion that needed refreshing, it has been a solid performer for Toyota, it’s large car feel and spaciousness has been a lure for those who like six-cylinder engines and aren’t prepared to compromise on performance. In terms of change, the Aurion gets a new grille and bumper, while Sportivo models have garnish changes to enhance a sporty look such as big black wheels. Inside, there’s a lot of extra detail, minor fitment features such as upgraded gauges, rear window blind, audio upgrades, Bluetooth streaming and upgraded trim detailing. The Aurion lands here in

three variations, the entry-level model sits at $50,990, while a Sportivo SX6 and ZR6 are priced at $52,490 and $54,990 respectively. The evaluation car was the mid-range model, and it performs as well as it looks. Other than those changes I’ve just mentioned, the concept of Aurion hasn’t altered. But given its capacity and strength, it does like to work hard and freely, it will surge under acceleration providing a quick standstill to 100km/h time of 7.1sec.
